Dear friends and neighbors,
Ohio is gaining national attention as one of the best places in the country to own and run a business, raise a family, and build a future. In fact, our state was just ranked thenumber-1 state in America to do business.
That progress matters, but it also raises an important question: how do we keep the momentum going and make sure Ohio families feel the benefits in their daily lives?
That was the focus of my recent telephone town hall with 195,000 Ohioans, where we discussed economic development, workforce training, public safety, education, and reforming public benefits so hard work is rewarded instead of punished.
Throughout the call, I heard from Ohioans who are working hard, raising families, running small businesses, and looking for practical solutions to the challenges they face. Those conversations help guide my work in the United States Senate and keep me focused on policies that make Ohio a better place to live, work, raise a family, and achieve your version of the American Dream.
During the town hall, I also asked participants to share their thoughts on several issues affecting Ohio families. Here’s what they had to say:
Ohio was recently ranked CNBC’s number one state to do business, a major milestone that reflects years of work to make our state more competitive, attract new investment, and create good-paying jobs. When CNBC first began ranking states in 2010, Ohio was 34th. Today, we are number-1. That progress did not happen by accident. It happened because we made Ohio a better place to invest, grow, and create opportunity. I will continue working to keep that momentum going by lowering costs, supporting job creation, expanding workforce training, and making Ohio the best place in America.
Career and technical education gives students the opportunity to graduate high school career ready with real-world skills, connections to local employers, and a pathway to a good-paying job. This was a priority of mine as Lt. Governor, and I’m working to expand these opportunity’s now in the Senate through my Student Debt Alternative and CTE Awareness Act.
Too many lower-income Americans face a “benefits cliff,” where accepting a raise, promotion, or better job can cause them to lose critical support all at once, trapping them in a generational cycle of poverty. I wrote the Upward Mobility Act to reform the public benefits system, so it rewards hard work and gives families a real pathway to upward mobility and independence.
