Honoring Sergeant Ries

Dear friends and neighbors,

Every day, law enforcement officers answer calls without knowing what dangers they may encounter.

On July 5, 2026, Sergeant Scott Ries was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call.

Sergeant Ries was a 10-year veteran of the Rittman Police Department who previously served with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Sugar Grove Police Department. He was remembered as a devoted husband and father, a trusted officer, and a dedicated member of the Doylestown community.

I recently spoke on the Senate floor to honor Sergeant Ries’s life, service, and ultimate sacrifice. His family, fellow officers, and his loved ones remain in our prayers.

Sergeant Ries represented the very best of Ohio’s law enforcement community. He made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Ohioans, and we will continue to honor his courage, remember his service, and stand with the community grieving this heartbreaking loss.

May God bless Sergeant Ries’s family and all of the law enforcement officers across our state who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities.

In your service,

Jon Husted
