Husted, Capito visit Centrus to discuss Ohio’s future in nuclear energy

“This plant is creating good-paying Ohio jobs close to home for people in Piketon, strengthening our domestic nuclear fuel supply and helping position Ohio at the center of America’s nuclear future.”

PIKETON, Ohio – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) today joined U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Shelley Moore Capito in Piketon to tour Centrus and discuss Ohio’s future in nuclear energy.

“I’m glad to host Senator Capito here in Ohio to see firsthand the work being done at Centrus to rebuild America’s nuclear fuel supply. Centrus is the only U.S.-owned company currently enriching uranium with American technology right here in Piketon. This plant is creating good-paying Ohio jobs close to home for people in Piketon, strengthening our domestic nuclear fuel supply and helping position Ohio at the center of America’s nuclear future. I’ll keep working to expand this operation, grow our workforce and make sure Ohio is leading the way in American energy production,” said Husted.

“It was a pleasure to join Senator Husted here at Centrus Energy’s American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio to see how federal investments in nuclear energy are transforming Ohio’s energy landscape. Through his work on the Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Husted has been a strong advocate for nuclear energy as we’ve worked hard to reduce regulatory burdens and permitting inefficiencies so that we can deploy clean, reliable nuclear energy in Ohio and across the country,” said Capito.

In late 2023, Centrus began uranium enrichment operations at the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio—the first U.S.-owned, U.S.-technology enrichment plant to start production since 1954. Under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Centrus is pioneering production of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) in Piketon.

HALEU is an advanced nuclear fuel that can power many next-generation nuclear reactors. Establishing a domestic supply of HALEU will help reduce America’s reliance on foreign sources of nuclear fuel and strengthen the U.S. nuclear energy supply chain.

In January 2026, Husted announced that the DOE will invest $2.7 billion to strengthen domestic enrichment services over the next ten years. This funding includes $900 million for Centrus Energy’s American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio.

This announcement came after Husted sent two letters to the DOE in support of funding for the plant. In April and September 2025, he joined colleagues in writing to DOE Secretary Chris Wright, advocating for the American Centrifuge Plant and domestically produced uranium enrichment.

Advocating for the plant builds on Husted’s support for American energy production. Husted’s bipartisan Nuclear REFUEL Act would simplify licensing requirements for nuclear recycling facilities in order to increase nuclear energy production in the U.S. The bill passed the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Oct. 29, 2025.
