Husted in Medina with Ohio business leaders

“The Working Families Tax Cuts Act delivers real relief—from small business tax deductions to Workforce Pell Grants that expand access to skills training and good-paying jobs.”

MEDINA, OH – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) today held a roundtable in Medina with local business leaders and economic partners to discuss workforce strategies and how the Working Families Tax Cuts Act helps Ohio’s businesses.

Husted also discussed his landmark legislation, the Upward Mobility Act. This bill would help people move off government assistance and provide them a pathway into the middle class. The Upward Mobility Act would directly benefit job creators and workers across Ohio.

“Supporting Ohio’s small businesses and strengthening our workforce remains one of my top priorities as Ohio’s voice in Washington. The Working Families Tax Cuts Act delivers real relief—from small business tax deductions to Workforce Pell Grants that expand access to skills training and good-paying jobs. My Upward Mobility Act also aims to help Ohioans earn more while filling in-demand jobs for local businesses. I appreciated the opportunity to meet with these leaders today: their work is helping drive Ohio’s continued economic growth, and I look forward to building on these conversations as we keep working to create more opportunity across our state and country,” said Husted.

The Working Families Tax Cuts Act (WFTCA) includes the following tax benefits for Ohioans:

  • No tax on tips: More than 6 million taxpayers have benefited, providing relief for service workers who depend on gratuity.
  • No tax on overtime: More than 25 million taxpayers have claimed the provision, giving essential workers—factory workers, linemen, police officers, nurses and more—a new break on their hard-earned extra hours.
  • A permanent 20% tax deduction for small businesses: Delivering $4,600 in average relief to 8 million entrepreneurs.
  • Enhanced deductions for seniors: More than 30 million seniors have claimed the provision.
  • An increased child tax credit of $2,200: More than 34 million families have claimed the provision.
  • A partially refundable adoption tax credit of up to $5,000.
  • Prevented a tax hike that would have cost the average family of four earning $80,000 about $1,700 MORE in federal taxes.

Workforce Pell Grants in the WFTCA will:

  • Allow students to use federal Pell Grant aid for short-term job training programs that lead directly to employment.
  • Open pathways for people who want rapid skill development without the time and cost of a traditional degree.
  • Include training programs as short as 8–15 weeks.
  • Expand the federal investment in skills training while making sure students can afford the education they need to succeed.
  • Make job training more accessible, especially for low-income learners who might otherwise be shut out by cost.

More about the Upward Mobility Act:

A benefits cliff occurs when Americans receiving federal public assistance experience a significant or complete loss of federal resources after a small increase in income. Americans receiving benefits may earn a raise or work more hours, but instead of increasing their total earnings, they end up worse off because their federal assistance drops sharply. Husted’s legislation seeks to eliminate the cliff and provide Americans a pathway out of poverty and into the middle class.
